My journey to becoming a librarian…

Before I knew it, I was in my senior year of undergraduate. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was almost through with my Bachelor’s in Psychology, a field I had chosen because of its wide applicability. Maybe it was too wide–with so many options, what exactly WAS I going to do after graduation?

I had finally gotten a work-study job working in the University of Michigan-Flint library. I loved it. When I thought about it, I realized that I had always loved working in the library. I had always loved the library in general. Maybe…

I had never realized that I could actually become a librarian. Suddenly, it dawned on me, and I started to research. There are library schools where you can learn how to work there! (What you learned, I wasn’t sure–boy, was I in for a surprise!) I applied to the University of Michigan because it was considered one of the best, and beyond my wildest hopes, was accepted. Now I’m working and learning and hoping to eventually do the job I’d always loved.

Currently, I’m working in a governmental library, and I realize just how right this field is for me. I miss working with the public–leading me to decide upon a goal as a public librarian–but even on the worst days, I can’t say I hate my job. I don’t care about making money. I just want a job where I can wake up in the morning and be excited about work, and if I can help others, all the better.

I’ve found my calling. The journey is only beginning, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
